Ellerbe Creek Bioblitz 2021!

 Join the Ellerbe Creek Bioblitz from September 24th-October 3rd! EN ESPAÑOL



​Please join us for a volunteer opportunity to explore and catalog Durham's beautiful nature!

No experience necessary! Simply take a photo of plant or animal life during the week of September 24th through October 3rd and upload it to the iNaturalist app - it's that easy!

iNaturalist training sessions will be offered, and you can participate on your own or in small organized groups anywhere in Durham. In addition we will be hosting organized walks in ECWA preserves and Durham parks within Ellerbe Creek Watershed! 


How to Participate:

Step 1: Download the iNaturalist app on your mobile device
The iNaturalist app is free and can be found in the App Store. Our partners at the Museum of Life & Science have created a useful how-to video. If you need more help using iNaturalist, we are offering an interactive Zoom to kick-off Bioblitz week - sign-up by following the link below.

Step 2: Discover your local parks and nature preserves to visit during Bioblitz Week
Simply click the link and find green spaces to visit during the week of September 24th-October 3rd

Step 3: Start making observations!
Take a picture and upload it to iNaturalist - whether it's in your own backyard or at the park, you can help us gather valuable data about the plant and animal life living in the Ellerbe Creek Watershed!

We have a variety of fun Bioblitz activities for kids of all ages! Click here to download the Environmental Education Packet. The packet includes:

Saturday, September 25th
MERRICK MOORE COMMUNITY GARDEN TOUR (8:00am-10:00am) - Sign up here!
Join ECWA, Museum of Life and Science, and the Merrick Moore Community Association as we discover the plants and wildlife of an urban greenspace in East Durham.

Sunday, September 26th
BEAVER MARSH BIOBLITZ (12:00PM-2:00PM) - No Sign-up Needed!
Discover one of Durham's best kept secrets with El Futuro, Museum of Life and Science, and ECWA as we record the flora and fauna of this urban wetland. Click here for the entrance to the Beaver Marsh Preserve. Public parking is available along Ambridge St - please obey all posted parking signs.

KERMES AT EL FUTURO (4:00pm-6:00pm) - No Sign-up Needed!
Join El Futuro and the Museum of Life and Science at the El Futuro green space (2020 Chapel Hill Rd, Ste 23) to explore the wildlife of urban Durham and participate in a fun outdoor gathering with food, games, traditional clothes, and more!

17 ACRE WOOD MOTH WATCH (8:00PM-10:00PM) - Sign up here!
Uncover the nocturnal denizens of the forest with Museum of Life and Science, Museum of Natural Sciences, and ECWA. Come see what moths and other insects are attracted to our bright lights at night!

Wednesday, September 29th
17 ACRE WOOD BIRD WALK (8:00am-10:00am) - Sign up here!
Fall migration is in full swing! Join ECWA's resident birding expert as we discover the migratory birds that are on their way back to their wintering grounds in Central and South America.

SPROUTS PROGRAM AT DURHAM FARMER'S MARKET (3:00pm-5:00pm) - No Sign-up needed!
Join Museum of Life & Science and ECWA for the Sprouts Program at the Durham's Farmer's Market. Activities include a Scavenger Hunt and exploring the Edible Plant Garden with iNaturalist! No sign-up is needed for this event.

Saturday, October 2nd
BIRDING 101 AT EAST END PARK (9:00am-11:00am) - Sign up here!
Join New Hope Audubon Society and Urban Community Agronomics to learn the basics of birding along riparian habitat in East Durham. Discover migratory warblers and thrushes in this urban greenspace. Sign-up will be limited to the first 20 registrants. Children's activities will also be available (no registration needed). Co-sponsored by the Durham Parks Foundation.

BIOBLITZ AT RED MAPLE PARK (11:00am-2:00pm) - No Sign-up needed!
Join Bragtown Community Association and ECWA to discover the species living at Red Maple Park (parking area here). Bring your indoor and outdoor plants for a Plant Swap at the Red Maple Park Pavilion!

LITTER CLEAN-UP AT LONG MEADOW PARK (12:00pm-2:00pm) - Sign up here!
Join Keep Durham Beautiful to help clean up Goose Creek. Urban waterways need our help - plus we will discover the wildlife living in one of Durham's local parks!

BIOBLITZ COUNTDOWN AND WRAP-UP (Virtual | 6:00pm-7:00pm) - Sign up here!
Join all of our project partners as we count down the coolest, creepiest, and most colorful sightings of this year's Bioblitz. Special accolades will be given to the best sightings of the week!
