Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association (ECWA) is seeking a motivated volunteer to assist with maintenance of the bioretention at Pearl Mill Nature Preserve. This is an exciting opportunity to help make the bioretention a primary community asset for the neighborhood in addition to allowing it to continue to function as a water filtration system. The bioretention volunteer will work under the guidance of the Stewardship Director and will be expected to dedicate 2-4 hours a month to complete the following tasks:

Experience
The ideal candidate for this position will have some knowledge of plant identification, however, this is not a requirement. A genuine interest and demonstrated willingness to learn are of the utmost importance. ECWA will provide tools, equipment, and training.

The bioretention volunteer will work under the guidance of the Stewardship Director and will be expected to dedicate 2-4 hours a month to complete the following tasks:
Position Duties
- Clear the two bioretention forebays to prevent sediment buildup
- Pull tree seedlings and other unwanted vegetation from in and around the bioretention cells
- Identify invasive species on the site and take action to exterminate them before they take hold
- Promote native plant species diversity on the site by working with staff and partners to acquire and plant new herbaceous perennials, seeds, and plugs
- Remove and discard litter around the bioretention area
- Monitor interpretive signs and report any vandalism if it isn’t easy to fix yourself
- Monitor bioretention area and file appropriate reports when necessary
- Properly use and store all tools
Experience
