Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association (ECWA) Bioretention Volunteer

Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association
Date: October 19, 2021

Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association (ECWA) is seeking a motivated volunteer to assist with maintenance of the bioretention at Pearl Mill Nature Preserve. This is an exciting opportunity to help make the bioretention a primary community asset for the neighborhood in addition to allowing it to continue to function as a water filtration system. The bioretention volunteer will work under the guidance of the Stewardship Director and will be expected to dedicate 2-4 hours a month to complete the following tasks:

Position Duties
  • Clear the two bioretention forebays to prevent sediment buildup
  • Pull tree seedlings and other unwanted vegetation from in and around the bioretention cells
  • Identify invasive species on the site and take action to exterminate them before they take hold
  • Promote native plant species diversity on the site by working with staff and partners to acquire and plant new herbaceous perennials, seeds, and plugs
  • Remove and discard litter around the bioretention area
  • Monitor interpretive signs and report any vandalism if it isn’t easy to fix yourself
  • Monitor bioretention area and file appropriate reports when necessary
  • Properly use and store all tools

Experience
The ideal candidate for this position will have some knowledge of plant identification, however, this is not a requirement. A genuine interest and demonstrated willingness to learn are of the utmost importance. ECWA will provide tools, equipment, and training.

Benefits
  • Access to training provided by ECWA on land management, tool safety, plant identification, and water quality monitoring
  • ECWA branded Columbia PFG shirt (after certain amount of hours volunteered)
  • Become part of a larger Preserve Steward Community within ECWA

If interested, please contact Donna Myers at donna@ellerbecreek.org
