We will send out this newsletter bi-monthly to keep you up-to-date with ECWA news and upcoming activities. The E-zine with watershed flora & fauna information will come out in alternate months.

ECWA SPOTLIGHT

ECWA IS HIRING!

Know any young people who are passionate about conservation and connecting people with nature? 

ECWA will be hiring a summer Max Mukelabai Diversity Intern through the Conservation Trust for North Carolina. Applications are due by February 20th.

We will also be hosting an AmeriCorps Project GEOS member this year who will focus on community engagement and environmental education. Applications for this position are due on February 8th.

For those of you interested in getting some exercise and supporting a great cause at the same time, we are looking for people to join Team ECWA for the Great Human Race, a 5-k that will take place in the Watts Hospital-Hillandale neighborhood on Saturday, March 28th. Please consider becoming a runner or walker and asking your friends and family to sponsor you as you race to help the creek! Creek week 2Creek Week is coming up the week of March 21st-28th and there are some great activities planned! Mark your calendars for the Connect with the Creek kickoff event on Saturday, March 21st at Durham Central Park from 2-5pm. Don't miss the scavenger hunt, cistern auction, creek murals, kids’ activities, water info, food trucks, parade with the Bulltown Strutters, and more. As part of Creek Week, ECWA will have a stewardship workday at Glennstone on Saturday, March 21st; a family-friendly bird hike at 17-acre wood on Sunday, March 22nd; and a clean-up on Goose Creek (a tributary of Ellerbe Creek) on Saturday, March 28th. Join naturalist Katie Kovach at 17-Acre Wood on Saturday, February 14th at 10am for this month's Family Explorers Club: From the Sky to the Ground: A Light and Shadow Adventure! Please RSVP here

The next Family Explorers Club will be Texture Detectives! at Pearl Mill on Saturday, March 7th at 10am 

The Explorers Club is an outdoor activity club for families with young children. While the nature exploration activities are primarily for children 0 to 6 years old, all in the family are welcome to participate. BCFBE 2     The Bull City Food & Beer Experience     benefiting ECWA
We are excited to once again be the beneficiary for the 3rd annual BCFBE to be held on Sunday, March 8th at 4pm at the Durham Performing Arts Center. Come educate and stimulate your palate and mind through the pairing of local food (showcasing 35 Durham restaurants) and unbelievable beer (from 50 premier craft/import breweries). This year there will be live entertainment from the Barefoot Movement. Thank you to DPAC, Sam's Quik Shop, and Tyler's Taproom for your support!

Volunteer Stewardship Days

ECWA will host a community stewardship day at 17-Acre Wood on Saturday, February 21st from 1pm-4pm. Volunteers will pick up trash along the creek, perform trail maintenance, and manage invasive species. 

Our next community service day will be at Glennstone Preserve on Saturday, March 21st from 9am to noon.

Nature Hikes

Join NC State professor Kathi Beratan and ECWA board member Jessie Allen for a stormwater hike at Pearl Mill on Saturday, February 28th at 2pm. Come learn about the geology and hydrology of Ellerbe Creek, how stormwater affects the creek, and the ways stormwater from impervious surfaces can be managed more effectively to reduce its impact on the creek.

ECWA will be offering two birding hikes in March! Nicki Cagle from the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke will be leading a bilingual (English/Spanish) migratory bird hike at the Beaver Marsh on Saturday, March 14th at 8am. Nicki will talk about bird migration, including where birds come from and how they survive long distance journeys. We'll also talk about the different types of migrant bird, and even learn some bird calls! 

As part of Creek Week, naturalist Robert Meehan will be leading a family-friendly bird hike at 17-Acre Wood on Sunday, March 22nd at 9:30 am. Please bring binoculars if you have them, some will also be provided.

MLK DayWith over 50 enthusiastic volunteers we had a very productive United Way MLK day of service at the Beaver Marsh in January! 

We were honored to be chosen by NC Fresh Catch as the beneficiary non-profit for the Blues & the Blues event held on Jan 2nd. The event was great fun and our volunteers did an awesome job at helping out!

A big thank you to naturalist Milo Pyne who led our first nature hike of 2015 on dendrology at 17-Acre Wood. The weather was beautiful and your wealth of information was greatly appreciated as always. 

Thank you to Duke University for a Doing Good in the Neighborhood Community Cares Fund Grant that will support ECWA's Family Explorers Club during 2015!

Thank you to the New Belgium Brewing Company for a small grant that will support more Creek Smart workshops in 2015!

Thank you to the Clean Water Management Trust Fund for their award to support acquisition of "The Rocks" - ECWA's next nature preserve!
